「月17万円じゃ、風邪もひけない」——そう話したのは、地方の工場で働くベトナム出身の技能実習生。母国の家族を養うために来日した彼は、家賃と仕送り、光熱費で毎月ぎりぎりの生活を強いられています。日本で働く外国人たちの現実は、想像以上に厳しいのです。

“I can’t even afford to catch a cold on ¥170,000 a month,” said a Vietnamese trainee working at a factory in rural Japan. He came to support his family back home, but with rent, remittances, and utilities, he is forced to live on the edge. The reality for many foreign workers in Japan is harsher than it appears.

表向きは「同等以上の給料」…でも現場は違う

出入国管理法では、外国人労働者に「日本人と同等以上の報酬」が求められています。しかし実際には、労働時間が長く残業代が支払われない、最低賃金ギリギリでの雇用、仕事の内容と報酬が釣り合っていないケースが後を絶ちません。制度と現場のギャップが、生活の苦しさにつながっています。

The Immigration Control Act requires that foreign workers be paid the same or more than Japanese employees. However, in reality, long hours without overtime pay, employment at minimum wage, and a mismatch between job demands and compensation are common. The gap between legal standards and workplace practice often leads to financial hardship.

「家族を呼びたくても呼べない」精神的な苦痛

給料が少ないだけでなく、生活が苦しい理由は他にもあります。多くの技能実習や特定技能では、家族を日本に呼ぶことができず、何年も子どもに会えない親もいます。「一番つらいのは、子どもの成長を見られないこと」——こうした声が日常的に聞かれます。お金だけでは測れない苦しさがあります。

It’s not just about low wages—many visa types like Technical Intern Training and Specified Skilled Worker do not allow family reunification. Some parents go years without seeing their children. “The hardest part is missing my child grow up,” many say. There is suffering that money alone cannot fix.

同じ「外国人」でも、格差は大きい

一方で、高度人材と呼ばれるエンジニアや研究者は、年収600万円〜1000万円、住宅手当・家族帯同可など手厚い待遇を受けています。つまり、日本で働く「外国人」と一括りに言っても、その中には大きな格差が存在しているのです。待遇の違いは、在留資格と職種に直結しています。

On the other hand, highly skilled professionals such as engineers and researchers enjoy salaries ranging from ¥6 million to ¥10 million annually, housing subsidies, and the ability to bring their families. Not all foreign workers are treated the same—their treatment depends heavily on visa type and job category.

「給料が足りない」と言えない現実

外国人労働者の多くは、日本語に自信がない、契約書が読めない、職場での立場が弱いといった理由から、給料や待遇に不満があっても声を上げられません。中には「安くても我慢するしかない」と諦めている人もいます。この“声なき声”を拾い、制度や企業の側が改善していく必要があります。

Many foreign workers cannot speak up about low wages or poor treatment due to language barriers, difficulty understanding contracts, or weak positions at work. Some have resigned themselves to accepting poor pay. These silent voices need to be heard, and it is up to companies and the system to initiate change.
