日本では、「時間をまもる」ことがとても大切です。5分でもおくれると、「信じられない」と思う人もいます。でも、ちがう国では「少しくらいの遅刻（ちこく）はふつう」という考え方の人もいます。これは、文化のちがいからくる感覚のちがいです。
In Japan, being on time is very important. Even being five minutes late can be a big problem. But in other countries, a little delay is often considered normal. This is a difference in cultural thinking about time.
「5分前行動」は日本だけ？
日本の学校や会社では、「時間ちょうど」ではなく、「5分前に来る」のがよいとされています。「まにあう」だけでなく、「早めに動く」ことが信頼につながると思われています。外国人には、この考え方がとてもきびしく感じることがあります。
In Japanese schools and companies, arriving five minutes early is seen as good behavior. Being just on time is not enough—being early builds trust. For many foreigners, this rule feels too strict.
外国では「時間ぴったり」に来る人が多い
外国では、時間ぴったりに来る人が多いです。むしろ、早く来すぎると「まだ準備できていない」と思われることもあります。また、国によっては5〜10分くらいの遅刻はあまり問題にならないこともあります。
In many countries, people arrive exactly on time. Sometimes, arriving too early is seen as inconvenient. In some cultures, being 5–10 minutes late is not considered a big problem.
「時間の感覚」がちがうと、すれちがいが起きる
日本人と外国人がいっしょに働くと、「時間を守らない！」と思う日本人と、「そんなに急がなくてもいいのに」と思う外国人の間ですれちがいが起こります。このちがいを知らないと、トラブルのもとになります。
When Japanese and foreign people work together, Japanese may feel others are not punctual, and foreigners may feel things are too strict. If they don’t understand each other’s view of time, it can cause problems.
「日本にいるときは日本のルール」も大事
もちろん、外国人の考え方も大事です。でも、日本で仕事をするなら、日本の会社の考え方も知っておくことが大切です。「時間をまもること」が信頼につながる社会だと知っていれば、うまくやっていけます。
Of course, the foreign way of thinking is also important. But if you work in Japan, it’s good to understand the Japanese way too. Knowing that being on time builds trust in Japanese society helps you adjust.
